Jan St. Werner formally announced his new solo album, Squares Will Fall, over a decade in the making and out November 13 via Thrill Jockey: as with all that he does, Werner’s love of music and collaboration shines through in this inventive and boundless listen.
The album’s comoposition began in 2012 as an electronic composition lasting exactly 30 minutes. The piece continued to evolve, eventually forming the foundation for an improvisation by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Jan St. Werner during Mouse on Mars’ Dimensional People sessions at Vernon’s Wisconsin studio. On the track, Werner reflects: “A computer music free jazz rhapsody jumbled in a space capsule with Justin not really understanding how he got on board. Justin asks the computer. The computer replies with a drum solo.” Watch below the official video.
