Scottish saxophonist and composer Matt Carmichael returns with “wide eyes”, the second preview of his forthcoming album Held in the Dark, due October 16. The track expands his jazz vocabulary through warm double-acoustic guitars, spacious arrangements and a strong indie-folk sensibility.
Written during a period of supporting a loved one through health struggles, it balances tenderness and isolation with a quiet sense of hope. Carmichael’s evolving sound brings together his Scottish folk and jazz roots with echoes of artists such as Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake and Big Thief. Held in the Dark marks an intimate new chapter for one of contemporary European jazz’s distinctive voices.
