Scottish saxophonist and composer Matt Carmichael has unveiled “red sky,” the opening track from his forthcoming fourth album Held in the Dark, arriving October 16. Expanding beyond the contemporary jazz language that has defined his previous work, the new single begins with detuned acoustic guitars before gradually unfolding into an immersive blend of saxophone, violin, piano and understated percussion.

According to the press release, written while supporting a loved one through serious health challenges, “red sky” transforms uncertainty and quiet resilience into deeply atmospheric composition. The track introduces an album that embraces darker emotional terrain while retaining the warmth and lyrical sensitivity that have become Carmichael’s hallmark.
