Ed Askew’s final recordings will arrive July 31 with The Final Painting, a posthumous album produced by Jerry David DeCicca that captures the late cult songwriter in one of his most intimate and emotionally exposed forms. Ahead of the release, Askew’s new single “Gray Air-o-Plane” pairs his fragile, conversational delivery with subtle guitar loops, conga rhythms, tenor saxophone, and ghostly backing vocals from Sharon Van Etten.

Long revered for the raw humanity of his outsider folk recordings, Askew once again transforms vocal imperfection into emotional force, delivering the song with the reflective cadence of an aging poet suspended somewhere between memory and confession. DeCicca’s understated production expands the piece into a faded Americana dreamscape, echoing the spiritual melancholy of Tom Rapp while preserving the unguarded warmth that defined Askew’s singular body of work.
